Important Things Before Shifting to PG

Nowadays, staying away from home for job or studies has become a common thing. In such a situation, Paying Guest (PG) accommodation, whether it is girls PG or boys PG is considered the most convenient and economical option.

But before shifting to PG, there are some things which need to be taken care of, otherwise there can be problems later.

1. Read the Terms & Conditions

It is advisable to read the terms and conditions of PG before finalizing it. Many PGs have specific rules regarding visitors, usage of common places and more. Go through the terms carefully before signing the agreement. Understand the terms clearly to avoid unpleasant surprises later.

Sometimes the PG owner sets some rules and restrictions. Like –

  • Notice period (how many days’ notice is required before leaving the PG)
  • Is entry of visitors allowed or not
  • Smoking/Drinking rules
  • Lock-in period (how many months minimum stay is mandatory)

It is important to read and understand these terms and conditions carefully.

2. Rent and Security Deposit

Check the monthly PG rent and understand if the rent will be increased after a year, if so, by what percentage. Check how much the security deposit payment is to be made. Also, check if other charges, including maintenance, water and electric bills, are included in the rent.

Before choosing a PG, first understand the rent and security deposit.

What is the monthly rent?

Are electricity and water bills included or separate?

Will the security deposit be refunded or not?

It’s safest to get all of this in writing.

3. Food and Drink Facilities

Most PGs provide meals, so check the menu, meal timings and food quality. If you are a non-vegetarian, confirm if they are providing it in their meals. Also, make sure the food includes morning tea/coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Many PGs allow cooking; check if their kitchen is equipped with utensils. Many PGs include food while in some you have to manage it yourself.

Will breakfast and dinner be available or just breakfast?

How is the quality and variety?

Is it allowed to cook/order food from outside?

If food is included, it would be a good idea to test it for a day or two.

4. Security and Convenience

Your safety is of utmost importance.

Are there CCTV cameras installed in the PG?

Is there proper security at the gate or not?

What is the entry-exit timing in the girls’ PG?

Is there a fire safety and emergency exit arrangement or not?

5. Cleaning and Maintenance

Hygiene is the top priority. Check if the housekeeping services are included. Check if the common areas, bathrooms and rooms will be daily cleaned.

Also pay attention to cleanliness and basic maintenance.

How often are the rooms and common areas cleaned?

Are internet, washing machine, water and electricity facilities available properly or not? Is the furniture (bed, cupboard, table, chair) in good condition or not?

6. Location and Connectivity

The location of the PG is also a big factor.

It is advisable to choose a PG near your workplace or college, reducing your commuting time. The PGs with good connectivity to public transport save time and money. Choose a PG nestled in a safe and well-lit location if you have late working hours.

Is the PG close to your office/college?

Is transport facility easily available or not?

Are there markets, hospitals and daily need shops nearby?

7. Get Reviews and Feedback

Before taking the final decision, take feedback from people already living there. Their opinion will help you make the right decision.

Reviews and feedback provide a clear picture of the reliability of a paying guest. Check online reviews of the paying guest, and if you find many good reviews, consider finalizing that. Online reviews can also give insight into the food, cleanliness and management. The feedback helps you make an informed decision before shifting.

Conclusion

Paying guest accommodation seems easy, but if you pay attention to rent, facilities, safety, rules and location before shifting, then your experience will be comfortable and safe. Always take a written agreement and make every detail clear, so that there is no confusion later.
