Hostel or PG Which is Better?

When we have to go out of the house for work or studies, the question that arises is where should we stay. There are many options outside the house like paying guests, a hostel, or taking a private room.

When you search for affordable accommodation the Hostel is the best option or searching for a peace private room and privacy then paying a guest (PG) is best.

(a) Gender Factor

It also has to be seen whether the accommodation suits gender. If you are searching for girls’ PG in Delhi, you are more concerned about safety and security. And if you are looking for boys’ accommodation, your vision may be different.

Hostel gives you all the basic facilities that are necessary especially for a student. If you are a student who has a hostel provided by the college or the university, you will get the basic features there. Some advanced universities also offer more services.

(b) Amenities

By basic services, we are talking about the all essential amenities. On the other hand, PG has more services compared to a hostel. You will get additional facilities like WiFi, AC, laundry services, etc. Depending on the PG you choose and the price you are paying, you will get these additional facilities.

(c) Social Environment

In PG, you will get working professionals or students as batch mates, while on the other hand, the hostel usually has students as batch mates.

If you are a student and you only want students as batch mates, you can go with the hostel. A PG might also have students. However, hostels have more students compared to PG.

On the positive side, if you are an assistant and you go with a paying guest instead of a hostel, you can learn from other working professionals and have differentiated friendships. For working professionals, PG is a suitable option as you can live a comfortable life. As most of the PG mates are earning, you can expect equal contributions in terms of comfort. There will be fewer differences of opinion or conflicts of interest.

(d) Freedom

Now, when it comes to freedom, you will have more options in terms of freedom.

To begin with, a hotel will usually have an early gate closing time. So, you arenโ€™t allowed entry after a certain time. However, that’s not applicable in PG. Some PG allow late-night entry as well. Even if the PG has a gate closing, it is far more than a hostel. So, you can easily get a late entry. Along with that, you can even invite guests. Most PG has comfortable facilities for guests where they allow you to invite family. On the other hand, there is limited freedom for hostels.

(e) Meals (Self-cooking or Tiffin Services)

A hostel prepares food for the whole hostel, and you can eat the mess food.

On the other hand, PG has a limited number of people. So, the food prepared here is cooked better as there are fewer people.

You will get home-cooked food with healthy options. If the hostel is good and charges a good amount, the food quality is better in both.

On the other hand, if you are planning to get tiffing services, you will only have PG as an option. PG allows you to get tiffin services instead of getting the mess food.

Further, most PGs even have a kitchen. So, you also have the self-cooking option available. If you are not cooking, you can always use it to cook some snacks such as pasta or maggi or even have some hot tea when you are studying or working late at night.

(f) Budget and Flexibility

Without a doubt, the hostel wins the competition here. In terms of budget, a hostel is usually cheaper compared to a PG. So, if you are running tight on budget, you should prefer a hostel.

PG usually has multiple plans where you can get AC rooms, non-AC rooms, private room, double sharing, triple sharing, etc. In this way, you will have multiple options. As the options are more, you will also get more pricing options. Even if you compare it with the cheapest plans, hostels are generally cheaper.

(h) Location

So, if you are only planning to go to college, you might prefer a hostel instead of PG. The hostel is usually inside the college campus or near the campus. PG, on the other hand, offers connecting points to various landmarks. The PG connects you with the bus stand, railway station, main commercial points, malls, and other major parts.

Working professionals usually prefer PG because they want to go to various places. So, they prefer PG more than the hostels. You can surely choose the one that is suitable for you.

(i) Comfort and Things to Carry

You need to carry out many things while you shift to the hostel. Usually, below are some of the things that you need to bring to a hostel.

  • Toiletries
  • Washing powder
  • Flip Flops
  • Locks
  • Blankets
  • Extension boards

PG usually has some of these things. So, you just need to carry the locks and blankets. Extension boards are yet another thing you can carry along with toiletries and flip-flops.

Summary

To conclude, PG is always better than hotels if you compare it with most of the scenarios. So, if you are confused between PG and hostels, you can always choose the PG. However, if you are a student, you can choose to go with the hostel as well if you are planning to have like-minded friends.

On the other hand, if you want the experience of staying with a working professional and starting work, you can choose the PG instead of going with the hostel. In this way, you can choose the one depending on what is right for you. Thatโ€™s how you can choose the right option between PG and a hostel.
